Tax Free Childcare
Looking for childcare for the February half-term in Leeds? Don’t forget you can save up to £2,000 a year with Government support.
Families are being reminded that opening a Tax-Free Childcare account can help their bank balance if they have children aged 11 or under – or 16 if their child has a disability – if they go to nursery, a childminder, attends breakfast or after school club, has holiday care or go to an out of school activity.
Victoria Atkins, Financial Secretary to the Treasury, said:
“Tax-Free Childcare can make a big difference to household budgets and I urge families to make sure they are getting the help they are entitled to.”
For every £8 paid into an online account, families automatically receive an additional £2 from the Government. Parents can receive up to £500 every three months (£2,000 a year), or £1,000 (£4,000 a year) if their child is disabled.

“We want to help working families and by using Tax-Free Childcare, they can use the Government top-up to make their money go further. Search ‘Tax-Free Childcare’ on GOV.UK to find out how it could help you.”
Common questions about Tax Free Childcare
You may be eligible for 30 hours of tax-free childcare if your child is disabled. Depending on your circumstances and the type of disability, there are different levels of support available; this could include Tax Credits as well as access to the Early Years Pupil Premium. Contact your local authority in order to find out more information.
Tax-Free Childcare is a UK Government scheme designed to help working parents with childcare costs. Eligible parents can open an account which the government will then top up by 20% of their payments, up to £500 every three months, per child. For children with disabilities, this amount can be increased to £1,000. The scheme also includes additional government contributions for those on lower incomes who may have a limited ability to save.
The UK government’s tax-free childcare scheme enables eligible parents to open an online account and pay in money. For every £8 they pay in, the government adds an extra £2, up to a maximum of £2,000 per child per year (for children aged over 11 this rises to £4,000). This money can then be used to pay for childcare costs with approved providers.
Tax-Free Childcare can be used to cover the costs of registered childcare, such as day care, nurseries, childminders and some after-school clubs. It is only available in England and cannot be used with other government funded schemes like the Childcare Voucher scheme.
To be eligible for tax-free childcare, both parents (or the single parent with responsibility for the child) need to either work, or be self-employed, or have a combination of work and approved training/education. The other parent also needs to not be prohibited from working due to receiving certain types of incapacity benefits.
To sign up for Tax-Free Childcare, you’ll need to create an online account. Visit the government’s website and click ‘Sign in/Register’. Once you provide your details, you can set up a payment plan and start managing your payments for child care. https://www.gov.uk/sign-in-childcare-account
Tax-free childcare is available to eligible working families in the UK. Both parents must be in paid employment and earning, on average, at least the equivalent of 16 hours per week, but no more than £100,000 each per year. You must also meet a residency requirement if you are from outside of the UK or an EU nation. In addition, your child must be under 12 years of age or 17 if they are disabled.
The amount of childcare support you can get through the Tax Free Childcare scheme depends on your household income and any childcare costs you may have. Typically, families can receive up to £2,000 a year per child – or £4,000 for disabled children – towards their childcare costs.
